Simon and I have been working on some writing today since he has taken a sudden interest. He also asked to have homework like Ben, so I dug out a preschool workbook I had. I am proud to say, he's an expert on the letter O. LOL. He also is partial to lower case i and capital T. Everything other than that seems to elude him, although he sometimes makes an accidental M, N, W, or V.
I am THRILLED to say that he most definitely left-handed, which makes it easier for me (also left-handed) teaching him how to write and also to cut with scissors.
Not making the same mistake I made with Ben at the same age where I only taught him how to write and recognize only capitals. The Kindergarten broke all the kids of that REAL fast last year. And boy did Ben squawk about it. So Simon will learn upper and lower from the start. LOL!

The Eyes Have It....
My mom keeps saying that Simon has my eyes... Simon and I were playing around with Photobooth on my computer this afternoon so I decided to test that theory. What do you think? ;)

Oh Brother...
Ben asked me to take this picture of him with Jonathan. :o)

This one I got by accident, but I love it. :)

Then Simon wandered into the room and hopped in the chair too. Normally, I can't *pay* either of the older two to sit still and have their picture taken. Too funny. Even with their willingness, I STILL couldn't get a decent shot of all three... mostly due to the fact that Jonathan is a little overly preoccupied with his hands and his socks lately. LOL!

Jonathan is Three Months Old!

Dear Jonathan,
Today you are a quarter of a year old!
You are such fun little guy... always ready with a smile and a giggle. Always happy to see us. You are definitely an extravert! You only cry for a few reasons, one of which is when you aren't being talked to or looked at. If one of us is talking to you and looks away, you'll bore holes into the side of our head with your eyes until we look back in your direction and pay attention to you.
If there is lots of excitement going on, you'll go on nap strike, as if you are afraid you might miss something. This can be frustrating, but at least most of the time, you don't get fussy about it.... you're just awake awake awake!
The chaos of your two older brothers does sometimes upset you... you get easily startled and upset by sudden loud noises. Seriously though. You have GOT to get used to this if you are going to live here! It's just life in our house... no one except mommy knows how to talk in an inside voice.
Speaking of mommy, you've definitely developed a strong mommy preference lately, especially when you're tired. Sometimes only mommy will do... the blessing and the curse of motherhood, I suppose. It usually means I'm on Jonathan duty from 6 in the morning until 7 at night when you go to bed!
You've fallen into more of a schedule lately, which has been wonderful. The most consistent part of it right now is your bedtime, which is usually between 6:45 and 7. We won't discuss how sleeping through the night is coming along... (yawn)
Lately, you've been working on lots of fun thing! You've mastered lifting up your head and looking around and you LOVE to look at yourself in the mirror. You also have been rolling over a lot (which wakes you up! Gr!). Oh, and you've discovered your hands... though not that they can grab things yet. You just like to hold them together in front of you like you are plotting some kind of evil scheme to take over the world. You have found they are also wonderful to shove in your mouth and gag yourself with.
It's been a fun month around here! Looking forward to what next month will bring!
I love you!
Love, Mommy
The Stats:
Weight: According to the Wii "Weigh your pet" feature, you are 13.5 pounds.... gained a pound in the last month!
Length: No idea... you were 23-1/2" a month ago... haven't grown too much lengthwise because much of your 0-3 stuff still fits and the 3-6 month pants are all still too big. :( You are kind of in a weird in between size!
Eating: same as last month - 28-30 ounces a day, 4-ounce bottles... spitting up a TON of that. LOL.
Diapers - solidly hanging out in size 2s.

Wow.
Simon is sitting here with me playing with his box of instruments... he pulled out the xylophone and I told him I'd show him how to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I played the first seven notes and then held his finger to help him play them.
Imagine my surprise when he looked at me totally matter-of-factly and said, "I know some more notes that are in Twinkle Twinkle." and FINISHED THE SONG.
?!
It shouldn't surprise me, really... given that he seems to be 100% my dad as far as his genetics go. Apparently the curly hair gene and the music gene are a package deal. LOL!
p.s. While playing with his instruments, he also stopped to ask me what sound a "French Hore" makes. *snicker*

(sigh)
I had some routine bloodwork done this morning and found myself feeling a twinge of sadness that it wasn't to test for hcg levels. LOL. I've decided it's less that I'd like to have another baby... (because truly, I really have very little desire to be pregnant ever again or to go through this newborn phase ever again) and more that I will miss all the excitement of pregnancy milestones.
I think I'll get over it though. ;)

First Grade Parent Teacher Conference...
I walked into the first grade conference this morning with the expectation of no surprises. I expected to hear that Ben is bright and does well in class, follows the rules, yada blah blah... but that he has trouble focusing, finishing things and following directions.
Instead? I heard basically that he's wonderful, very bright, a great student, an absolute delight to have in the clasroom and has tons of friends. His reading group is reading a third grade book right now and his reading skills are great... his math group is being given progressively harder and harder work and he's right there at the top of the pack with that. And somewhere in there, I kid you not, the teacher actually said the words... "he always follows all my directions to a T, always pays attention and always finishes his work."
(record scratch SFX)
I actually stopped her with a time out sign and said, "Are we talking about the same child?" (because seriously, this is NOT a descripton of the Ben *I* know)
She admitted that he does drift easily and can give the appearance that he's not with her when she's talking... but that he always comes through on the work and knows exactly what he's supposed to be doing.
Again... seriously?
Obviously, I'm extremely proud that his conference went so great, and I'm so VERY proud of him! But I can't help feeling like the kid is coasting a bit and that when the work gets harder in a few years, his distractible tendencies are going to start to hinder him more. I do his homework with him every single night and I know for a fact he doesn't pay attention all the time. I know he doesn't read the directions and I know he rushes through his work and often tries to get away with the least amount of effort possible. Apparently, he puts forth more of an effort in school... at least, I guess what's what I can assume from this conference.
At any rate, the only things she she said he needs to work on at all are his handwriting -- it can be very sloppy when he's rushing and he also has a tendency to reverse letters when he's rushing... and also (and this she said was a goal for all the kids in her math group) to keep working on learning to expand on answers and use math terms to explain how they got to an answer, rather than just giving the answer.
So yeah, fantastic...but I'm cautious in my enthusiasm, because I'm not sold on the fact that school will always come this easily for him. Too much evidence that he has inherited the genetics that plague the rest of the family We'll see though. Maybe I'll be proven totally wrong!

Three Bears in the Bed and the Little One Said...
Roll over!
Jonathan just rolled tummy to back for the very first time! :o) While this is exciting and a milestone and all, it means our bedtimes are about to become more complicated until he figures out how to roll the other way after he rolls onto his back. LOL.
Anyway, yay Jonathan!

This video was taken almost two years ago to the day... Ben Reads
It's amazing to me that this is where he is now! A lot of this progress has been made just since September. He was reading well by mid-Kindergarten, but this year, he has made great strides in paying attention to punctuation and reading amoothly and with expression. He used to get SO frustrated when pages had a lot of words on them and would just quit, even though he could easily read it. Now he's not intimidated at all!

American Education Week...Day.
Today was first grade visitation day at Ben's school. It's always fun to see what goes on there. During the hour or so we were there, we watched them take a spelling test and do an exercise with a book about insects that involved declaring what they already knew, what facts they learned and what questions they had. I learned that bees have baskets on their knees and that Katy-Dids hear through holes in their legs. (I think?)
I was commenting to my mom that you can already pick out various stereotypical personalities in the class. I have the future student council president pegged, as well as the head cheerleader and homecoming queen, a couple jocks, yearbook editor, the shy quiet guy who gets all the girls, etc. In each of them, I see someone I graduated with. It will be interesting, if Ben stays in the same school district through the years, to see if my predictions hold true. ;) Interestingly, my own son is one of the ones I can't quite put my finger on. LOL. He's not particularly outgoing, but he's not shy either. Hard to say where he'll fit...
Ben got a kick out of having his baby brother at school with him. (Simon was at preschool this morning) He kept looking over and smiling and waving at us. :o) Jonathan was also a bit of a distraction for the two kids we were seated directly behind. Although, he was not more of a distraction then Ben's friend Gabe's youngest brother (about 16 months old or so) who was exploring and babbling. Thankfully, none of this fazed the teacher and she seemed to welcome it.
All in all, a nice, albeit, chaotic and whirlwind morning. Simon and I are home now and I'm just letting him play Wii so I can sit quietly and make my brain stop buzzing.

First Grade Morning...
Today was my volunteer day in Ben's class. Always fun. :o)
I spent a LONG while in the book room making copies. This should have only taken ten minutes, but teachers kept coming in and the rule is that teachers get priority on the copier, so I had to keep stopping. I spent many many minutes perusing the shelves of reading books and pretending to be interested and not in a hurry. Tiki Tiki Tembo anyone?
One of the teachers who wandered in was a girl I went to high school with. This was a bit of an swkward interaction. I knew she worked there and had seen her in the halls but she'd was always busy with students and didn't notice me. Today, when I turned around and we both realized who the other was, there was that moment of, "Oh hi... you... person... I haven't talked to since highschool graduation..." Don't get me wrong, she's very nice and we were friendly in high school, but 15 years have passed. Always weird. Anyway, so now though we have the whole weird dynamic of we're familiar but she's a teacher at my child's school situation. Do I call her Krisan? Or so I call her Mrs. Frist? I just don't know, so I didn't call her anything. It was just strange. Or maybe it's just me and my horrible social awkwardness. LOL. Probably more that than anything else.
So anyway, I finally finished up my copies and headed back to the classroom to take kids out to do reading with them. She handed me a list with the kids numbered 1-11... I panicked when I realized #4 on the list was this little girl who NEVER EVER SPEAKS. Seriously, she was in Ben's class last year too and I have never heard the child talk. Once, I was working with her group in Kindergarten (before I knew she didn't speak) and I sat down next to her... I leaned over to look at her work and called her Sweetpea and she looked at me like a scared puppy.
Annnyway, so yeah, I wondered how working with her alone on reading would go. I actually pulled the teacher aside when I took child #3 back in and asked her if Geena would be okay with me. She said she probably would... that she'd been talking recently when people worked with her one-on-one. It wasn't easy, for sure. She didn't want me near her.. everytime I'd lean over to help her with a word, she'd back further and further away. And at first, she just stared at the cover. I asked her three times what the title was and was about to give up and take her back to the room but, she did finally read the book to me. When we were finished, she couldn't scurry back to the classroom quickly enough... but it was a small victory! I had really started to wonder if she EVER spoke. I am so curious what is up with her.
I also got to glare at the mean little redhead who is Ben's nemesis. (actually, she's kind of a class nemesis, from what I gather) I caught her out at the lockers taunting Ben saying, "You are a bad bad boy... bad boy bad boy..." When she saw me watching her, she stopped. Sneaky kid, I tell you.
Didn't get to observe Ben much, or at all really... his group is never in the reading rotation on the days I am there. But, tomorrow is the first grade day for American Ed. Week so I'll finally get to just sit back and be a fly on the wall. Can't wait! Conferences are next Monday, which should be even more interesting. LOL.

Daddy's Fault...

Ben brought home a math paper yesterday that asked them to show what 12+2 was by "counting on". (which apparently means go, "12, 13, 14" to arrive at the answer.... Blah! All this new, crazy math you know!)
Anyway, so Ben wrote, "I know 12+2 = 14 because in basketball you count by 2s."
I got such a chuckle out of it, and at the teacher's matter-of-fact response, "I told you to show your work by counting on." that I had to email her. I said that I just pictured her shaking her head while writing it. (Ben's inattentiveness to directions sometimes is truly just astonishing and I KNOW it's going to be one of our discussion points during the conference in two weeks)
She wrote back that I was dead on. She said his answer was so sincere that she didn't have the heart to tell him he was WRONG... but that she NO idea where he was going with it.
LOL! I wrote back that I knew exactly where it came from. Since Ben was probably three, Tom has taught him math concepts by using basketball and football scoring.
Gah. My husband is such a dork. ;)

Just Desserts....
I was telling my mom on the phone this morning that I kind of think of Jonathan as the dessert after successfully eating my two helpings of brussels sprouts. LOL.
I am not playing favorites. I swear and it's NOT at all that Ben and Simon were not enjoyable babies... they both were in their own way and I have wonderful memories of their early days. But there is no denying that Ben was ridiculously challenging -- colicky, super sensitive, cried when people looked at him or talked to him from VERY early on (he has since made up for all of that by being the easiest six-year-old ever) And Simon, while pleasant and relatively easy as a baby, was still my first foray into having multiple children to deal with at the same time and so came with his own challenges.
Jonathan? Seriously. He is as easy going as they come. When he wakes up? He grins from ear to ear. If you talk to him (pretty much no matter who you are), he grins from ear to ear and giggles. He loves to sit and look around, he plays, he smiles, he eats, he sleeps. (though that last thing still needs some work, so all is not perfect, by any stretch) ;) Also, I am fairly relaxed this time around (about as relaxed as someone as Type-A as I am can possibly be), so that helps too.
At any rate, I feel like I earned this kiddo and I am enjoying him to the fullest extent possible!! Is it a baby of the family thing? Or just his personality? I feel like more family babies are like this -- pretty laid back and happy. Is it because they have to be to get along in an already chaotic household? Is it because parents are more relaxed? Is it just luck of the draw? I don't have the answer... but definitely enjoying it, whatever caused it. ;) (especially since I'm sure when he's three, he'll be just as difficult as the other two were) ;)

Angel Tree...
I don't know about you, but every single year, I say I am going to do a Christmas charity thing and never get around to it, which SUCKS. Operation Christmas Child is the one I keep saying I'm going to do and then the deadline comes and goes and yet another year, I have done NOTHING.
Anyway, this past weekend, I was in Superfresh and they had just set up the Salvation Army Angel Tree. I was drawn to it because the little slips have the kids' names and ages on them (along with clothing sizes and a gift wishlist) I knew if I picked tags off the tree, I'd get it done because if I put it off and didn't, those kids I picked wouldn't get anything and that would make me a horrible, horrible person. LOL. (nothing like a little motivation)
I decided to do three, one child as close to each of my boys' ages as possible. I found a 1-year-old, a 3-year-old and a 5-year old, all boys. :o)
The Target is right next door, so I figured I could do it one child at a time during three separate Target trips and run the gifts right over to the grocery store so I couldn't procrastinate. This morning, Simon and I finished up the wishlist for the 1-year-old and I have to say, it was a lot of fun. We got him a little outfit, a winter coat and a riding toy. :) (yay for Target's prices and sales!) Just as planned, we walked it right over to the store and they took the bags off our hands. Perfect!
My plan is to take Ben and Simon over together to help me fulfill the lists for the 3 and 5-year-olds... I'm hoping they'll take something away from it... maybe that's wishful thinking, especially for my three-year-old to comprehend... but hopefully it will at least get Ben thinking about someone his age who is less fortunate.
Anyway, it's a pretty convenient deal if you shop in the shopping center I'm talking about... so go check it out if you're interested! I really like that there are names and ages associated with the requests.... Operation Christmas Child is wonderful, but the boxes don't go to any specific child. It's nice to picture little boys' my kids' ages opening the gifts on Christmas morning...

Crackbook...
I'm attempting to break my Facebook addiction. I found myself thinking in third-person statuses in the middle of the night last night and decided that was a bit disturbing. I don't want to delete my account altogether, I just want to get to the point where I only check it once a day or so.
Today, my goal is not to get on there at all. I'd like to do that for a few days just to get out of the habit of opening FB up everytime I sit down at my laptop.
Ugh. Stupid addictive personality of mine. Seriously. I've told Tom he's never EVER to allow me into a casino. And it sure is a good thing I've never tried any drugs! Gah.

Out of the Mouth of Ben...
This morning, while eating breakfast --
"Remember when I was little and I only knew one subtraction problem?"
"umm, sure?"
"Yeah. (sighing nostaglically) It was 12-3=9."

Tooth Fairy is on Duty Again Tonight...
Ben lost one of his bottom teeth at school (#6!) today and brought it home in the most adorable little green tooth-sized treasure chest from the school nurse. :o) He was so excited so have lost it at school. He has wanted that to happen since he started losing teeth!
So yeah, a visit from the Tooth Fairy is in order tonight, I suppose, which kinda stinks because I had been meaning to get to the bank to get some golden dollars for these occasions. Didn't make it. Oh well, maybe next time. He'll have to settle for quarters. ;)

Turkey Lurkey...
Simon and I made this today and he got a big kick out of it. I've seen a lot of turkey crafts, but this was the first one I've seen that uses hands AND feet. Anyway, thought I'd share it because some of you might want to try it toO! :):

Yesterday Was a Good Day...
... and that means Simon didn't throw any tantrums, played well with his brother, ate his meals without wandering away from the table in disgust and gave his cousin a hug instead of screaming in her face for merely saying hello to him.
And so goes life with a moody 3-1/2-year-old. I swear, the 3s are like the "14s" of the under 10 world. I've been dreading them practically since Simon was BORN, because at the time, Ben was going through them and he was pretty much equally awful, minus the violent streak that his younger brother has added to the fun.
I was feeling pretty down about Simon's preschool angst last week until I started talking to two of my girlfriends who also have 3-year-olds. We exchanged tantrum tales and our frustrated reactions to them, both of which made me feel infinitely better about life and the temporary nature of kid issues. (we all also have 5-6-year-olds who have suddenly become the most angelic, helpful, cooperative little creatures ever...)
Thank goodness for friends with similarly aged kids, is all I have to say! It also helps that one of them lives close enough that I can hear her three-year-old screaming his head off in the morning outside because he doesn't want to wear his jacket -- just like mine. Nothing like knowing someone else is going through the same crappy struggles you are at the very same moment! ;)
Is it May yet? Because I can't wait for May... of course, then I have one more three-year-old to look forward to. But for now, I'm not going to think about that. ;)

More Jonathan Jellybean...
(nickname du jour)
Really must get some good new pictures of the other two, but this one is just an easier subject. ;)
Interestingly enough, he was in SUCH a good mood for these pictures and shortly thereafter, he got all kinds of screamy, which is really odd and out of character for him. We spent a good part of the early evening trying to decide whether to take him over to pediatric after hours... but he had no fever, no green goo, no nothing except a cry that sounded like he was in pain. (wasn't acting like it was his tummy either)
Still no idea what it was all about... but I gave him Tylenol anyway and he seems mostly back to normal this morning. There's been a lot of drool so I am seriously starting to wonder if teeth are on their way in the next couple months. Ben got his first tooth somewhere around 4-1-2 months, so it's not out of the question. (sigh) I hate teething, so I really hope it's not that. I'd like to postpone THAT as long as possible!

Babies are so funny looking sometimes. ;)

Finally got a picture of him in the "two-month" outfit that the other boys wore. :)

Afternoon Workout...
And one and lift and two and lift...

And sit and hold...

So Jonathan's getting pretty good with the head lifts! :o) I love this stage when they start to get a little less lumplike.
I've also been working on getting him to start to sit up because, selfishly, I know my life will be a little easier when he can sit up and look at the world that way and start to play with things put in front of him. He's much more content when I hold him sitting up in my lap!
I've worked on all my little guys with the sitting as early as possible because of this! And believe it or not, my sitting "workout" technique actually seems to work! With the other two, I had them sitting well by four months. (save for the occasional random lurching backward, which is solved by a nice fluffy pillow positioned strategically behind them for a month or so.)
Jonathan's personal best today was a good 10 seconds or so of sitting completely upright and looking around before he started to droop. ;)
Interestingly enough, he seems to have no interest in attempting to roll over. He just doesn't get angry enough when he's put on his stomach. And I really think it takes that annoyance to get them pushing and trying to lift their bottoms up and roll. Looks like it might be awhile before we see that milestone!
Whew. That was a rough workout. His trainer is hardcore! Taking a breather. (new outfit because of the world's biggest poo blowout)

Yo homey. Just chillaxin'.

Big brother took a break from fort building and asked to have his picture taken too

Hello down there! (I was sneaking in some extra head lifts from a different vantage point) ;)

Motivation...
If I ever get down about this whole pumping thing, I just need to go visit my gyn. I received all kinds of gushing from her today about how amazing it is that I can do it all day every day and how she hated it and couldn't keep it up while she was working and rah rah rah wow wow wow! LOL! (please note that personally, I do not find it all that amazing because it's really all I know, but people who have nursed and pumped only on occasion seem to)
The pediatrician is almost as motivational. He seems to find my output and dedication to it fascinating. Though, I have to say it's a little weird to keep having conversations with the pediatrician about my boobs.
So if I just visit each of them maybe twice a month for the next nine months or so, maybe that will be enough praise and motivation to get me to a full year. ;) What I'm saving in formula costs, I'll spend in co-pays, but it'll be worth it! ;)

Simon Says...
Simon is sitting here at the kitchen table painting and the following two, completely opposite types of statements just came out of his mouth. Two statements that, when put together, very much paint an accurate picture (ha ha.. pun intended) of who he is.
"Look! The blue color is dissolving! Dissolving means something disappears in water."
And then just as I was feeling very impressed at his correct use of that word, he comes out with....
"I am making this painting all brown. See? It's a picture of poop. Poop that goes in the potty."
Smart kid. But oh so SUCH a boy.

Sleep, Glorious Sleep....
I'm risking the wrath of the blog curse posting about this again... but... HOLY SLEEP, Batman!
We've been trying to keep J up until 7:30 or 8p.m. at night these days at the suggestion of the pediatrician. I'm honestly not a fan of forcing a baby to stay awake, plus, this particular baby can't really even BE forced to stay awake... so if he seems zonked, I just put him down. But the last few days, his last nap of the day has ended around 5:30, which puts him in prime position to be awake until our goal time. Yay!
At bedtime, he takes his bottle, usually 3-4 ounces, and conks out without a fuss. Then he sleeps until 11:30 or 12, takes a bottle in his sleep and sleeps until somewhere between 3:45 and 5a.m. Then he usually takes another bottle and continues to sleep until about 7.
I can't complain about that! Especially since as recently as two weeks ago, he was still waking up every 2-2.5 hours!
He's turning out to be such a laid back kid, which is SO wonderful. Not counting on him staying that way since Simon was a pretty chill baby too... but for now, I'm enjoying it!
He's SO happy all the time too... smiles all over the place. This is definitely a good final chapter to the whole baby experience for me. :o) Definitely time to stop while we're ahead!

Pump it Up...
So yeah, still pumping. Going on ten weeks now, which is kinda amazing to me considering that at two weeks, it seemed like doing this for any length of time might really be impossible. But, things have gotten SO MUCH easier... I've dropped one of my overnight pumps, the one between 2:30 - 3:30a.m., which has helped immensely, so I'm only pumping six times a day now, sometimes five. Also things seem to have leveled off enough that I can go five hours during the day if I'm busy and I need to. (I try not to go more than four hours though)
I've been pondering how to start rotating the massive quantity of frozen milk I have since I'm about one shelf away from running out of freezer space. I actually have started giving it to Simon as chocolate milk sometimes. He doesn't seem to notice... except for today when I pulled some out from early September (the few times I'd given it to him before now, I gave him fresh that I had left in the fridge from the same day). It apparently tasted weird because he noticed. It smelled soapy to me too, which I'm told happens to frozen milk sometimes. It's fine to drink, it just makes the taste a little off. Here's hoping Jonathan will take it (going to experiment with that today sometimes) because otherwise, I'm just going to have to start tossing it, which just might make me cry. But what can I do? If I'm out of freezer space, I'm out of freezer space!
Still determined to make it through January and maybe longer...
One pump at a time, one day at a time!

...Jonathan has been sleeping from 8-midnight, eating in his sleep and then sleeping until 4a.m! Oh happy, HAPPY day!
